Contest Scores
We thought it would be a fantastic learning opportunity to see how our professional judges scored your videos. These numbers in each column are the average combined judge scores for that criteria. The number on the right is the overall total score.

You can see that some scored very well on one area, but lost points in another (such as video quality or background). So it is the overall package that makes for a great video. As a judge I first watched them all, then picked the one I thought set the bar. Then I went back through and graded the others in comparison to it. Could they have been more creative? Could they have had a better set? If the one I liked best upon first viewing did better then it was easy to say, “Yes, they could have.”
Sad to say, some had such poor quality video that I could not see how they actually did as a ventriloquist. Either the shot was too fuzzy, or too far away, or their face was in a shadow. This resulted in a lower score on ventriloquism skills than they may have deserved, but “if you don’t show your work you don’t get credit.” (I learned that as a math teacher.
Ventriloquism skills include more than just lip control. They include lip synchronization, believable puppet movement, and natural facial expressions. Several had great lip control, but would go into a fixed position when the puppet spoke. One way to notice is to play the video without sound and use a piece of paper to cover the puppet’s face. Concentrate on just the ventriloquist. You can tell when they have slipped into that almost frozen expression. I wish I could tell you my favorites in each category, BUT I don’t want to influence anyone’s choice for the Grand Prize winner.

I have to say watching all the video’s was alot of fun! So much good work. Axtell i know is very proud to see his product doing such good work. I must say i really LIKE seeing the performances in a LIVE setting. I use several of Axtells puppets in my shows and as you all know crowds love them. My Croco has become a staple in my school shows. Croco is the one puppet that is known in my show. My suggestion is find that one puppet that will become your staple. To all you who submitted you all did very well.
Thanks
Ken

I was very impressed with Lewis Meda’s ventriloquism skills. Would you say that all divisions on this skill were judged the same? If they were, which is what I think, he might really be GREAT as he gets older, because his scores in that skill were very high.
