MIND READER!
How it works.... There are no electronics in the product..no batteries needed...the needle is completely under your control.  The actual mechanism will remain a secret, but it's a dream to operate and you control it 100%, so move it fast, move it slow, move it to 3 - 6 - 9 or 10....it's up to you.
The secret to this product is in "working your crowd" you can really get a fantastic reaction using this one!

I invented this device 16 years ago in 1990 and it's taken me this long to bring it to life. I've honestly got over 200 more inventions to make, but with the same math that would be 3,200 years! Originally I had always called it the "Clap-O-Meter" but then in my research this year I found out Trevor Lewis had already used that name for a very clever thermometer-like applause meter. I had never seen his so I almost stopped developing mine at that point. Then it hit me...WOW this is so much more than an applause meter. You can use it to "measure" anything with the sensor...it could be a microphone, a probe, any type of input device! The possibilities are endless!  Almost EVERY entertainer could come up with a unique use for it!   So there you go...that's the story of Axtell's "Off The Meter"! Now let's see what YOU do with it!

Thank you!    Enjoy!...Steve Axell

IDEAS FROM KEN SCOTT

School show idea : I can see this being used in a school setting with a student helping you. Have them hold a book and start to read it, place the microphone instrument up to the head of the child. The more they read the more the meter starts to move. The more they read then it explodes.

Cub Scouts: Usually there are three groups there. use the meter to see who is the loudest group.

Birthdays: Hold the meter up to several kids the meter moves a bit but then bring the birthday child up and hold the meter up to them and let it explode. Only the birthday child can make the meter go to 10.

Off the Meter by Axtell
Dennis Michael's routine idea
is... "Off the Meter!"
What immediately comes to mind when I saw the Steve Axtell's "Off the
Meter" is my standard Warm-up routine at the beginning of every show. Steve Axtell's "Off the Meter" allows the kids to "get in the mood" for a fun and Exciting magic show.
-----------------------------------------------------
Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening boys and girls...

Welcome to the 'Abracadabra Magic Show' (or Name of place or event). My name is Dennis Michael ...Now before we get started, let me mention that if you see anything during the show that you like or enjoy, feel free to clap your hands and applaud. We're going to have lots of fun and magic. Also, if you see anything during the show that looks funny, or sounds funny and makes you want to laugh, go right ahead and laugh...

Remember, today we are going to have a lot of fun and magic... We are going to make things appear and disappear. We're even going to have some of you come right up here (to the stage) and assist me... (Many hands will immediately rise) But not now! ... Later on in the show, I will pick my assistants by how well they stay in their seats and by how much they enjoy the show.

By the way, I want all of you to help me right now.. to see how many are excited about the show... I have a meter that tells me how excited you are about this show. Testing... Testing... One... Two... three... When I count to three I want you to call out that magical word 'Abracadabra'... Get ready... One ...Two... Three... Abracadabra... (Meter goes to about a six)

(Not everybody normally shows 'high' enthusiasm the first time this is done so state...) Now that wasn't very loud...It sounded like the girls were louder then the boy... Girls Only... When I count to three say the magic word Abracadabra. Remember Girls only... One ...Two ... Three... ABRACADABRA! ... (Meter goes to a four) Now Boys, you're not going to let the girls beat you... Right! ... Lets see if you can beat the girls...Remember Boys Only...On the count of three... One ...Two ... Three... ABRACADABRA! ... (Meter goes to four and ties with the girls) Wow, that IS really a lot of excitement! The girls and boys tied... They both got a four... (Slowly say) Let's see... If I add four plus four ... the answer is ... 'Forty Four'..

(They yell eight) It's not Forty Four? If it is eight, I wonder what would happen if everyone says that magical word together, maybe we could get the meter up to ten. Let's try it. One... Two.. This means the teachers and parents join in too. Are you ready?... One ...Two ... Three...Abracadabra... (Meter goes to a nine.)

WOW! That's the highest ever!... I can't imagine what would happen if it went to a ten. I can tell this is really going to be a great show and
you all are so excited. Give yourself a hand and let get going with the
Abracadabra Magic Show.

Now to close the show.....

Before closing, I want to thank you for being a wonderful audience. It's fun to be amazed, its fun to be amused... But MOST of all.... it was MY pleasure to put a smile on each of your faces.

Let's give the Principal and the Teachers a LOUD round of applauses for bringing The Dennis Michael Abracadabra Magic Show to you. (Applause) "Before we leave QUIETLY, because that lets the school know you would like to have The Dennis Michael Abracadabra Magic Show back again, I want you all one more time, on the count of three, to say that magical word ABRACADABRA... Ready...

(Have meter in hand)

One...Two...Three...

ABRACADABRA!

(Meter goes to 10 and Blows up)

WOW! You broke the meter... I can tell you really enjoyed this show.

Thank You Very Much!

"Steve Axtell's "Off the meter" product is just that... it is completely off the meter in regards to how great this product is. Not only is all of Steve's products well built, but the craftsmanship and quality is the best I have seen in a long time. Off the meter is a product that I can see so many uses for. It can be a wonderful way to get audiences excited right from the start of your show in an engaging and visual format with a kicker ending that just gets everyone laughing and having a good time. The best part about Off the Meter is that it has so many incredible uses in any show. It is really something any entertainer can use in his or her show. Just seeing this product in action has my mind already full of great routines and ideas I can put into play. Thank you Steve for another great product I am certainly going to be using in every one of my shows. All I can say is "WOW, you got to get one of these things."

The Magic Storyteller

(Watching the video clip above) First, I started laughing...then my jaw literally dropped when I saw it burst open at the end! Perfect for getting not only the kids, but also the adults at the party to participate! (yelling contest between kids and parents...schools, between students and teachers!)

Applause meter for yoddeling contest.

Applause meter as a running gag to see if your last bit was better than the last one.

Self-esteem booster for self-esteem show (my first thought for my new self-esteem show).

USE IT IN STAGES DURING YOUR ENTIRE SHOW - As an opener, it's perfect..."are you ready for the show" yelling contest...when the meter hit's ten you can start!" (Repeat 2-3 times during the show) I would'nt do the "breaking the meter" bit until after the show, when you ask them how they liked the show (or if they learned anything in the case of an educational show) this will excite the client to re-book when they see the kids react.

Heck, street performers would LOVE this item! "Did you like the show?"(get them going, it bursts open)."Then please don't forget to tip so I can buy a new one of these things!"

I know I"ll wake up with an idea at 3 o'clock in the morning tomorrow, so I'll keep you posted when new ideas hit me...

PROBLEM WITH THE METER!

Hello Steve and Staff,

A quick note to let you know that
I found a problem with Off the Meter

A WORD OF CAUTION
MAKE SURE YOUR PA IS SET TO MAX

You better have your PA turned up all the way to overpower all the applause and laughs that you will get! WOW! What a fantastic reaction!

It's now part of the show forever!

Steve, thanks once again for
making me look
SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD!

Magically,
Ken Winters

I got my "OFF THE METER" today, and I am very impressed with the quality and construction. I have been playing with it all afternoon and it is very easy to use. You are in control of the meter at all times and can make it go to ANY number you want (1, 2, 2.5, etc.) and even "off the meter" (past 10). The method/gimmick to move the "needle" is not what I thought it would be, and in fact it is much better. The case itself is durable plastic, and should last a long time. This prop is SOLIDLY BUILT!

I would be willing to bet that you could drive a car over the case and it wouldn't break (though I don't plan on trying that intentionally). The case has sliding locks so it won't come open until you want it to. The "microphone" is well made also. This is going STRAIGHT into my show! I can't wait to see what the audience reaction will be. Another high-quality product from Axtell Expressions!

A few hand coils would make a nice visual, messy (and easy to clean up) addition to the foam confetti.

I am really excited about the possibilites of the many uses of the meter, such as a geiger counter, a lie detector, a "card-locating-machine," (the chosen card or several of the same card could fall out of the meter when it blows up), a "hot or not" ugly meter (and have it blow up when I turn the machine on myself), etc..

The ideas are only limited to your imagination.

IS THIS THING WORKING??
A very funny thing to do when testing is to have NOTHING happen. Imagine testing two people for say, "Fashion I.Q." your first volunteer measures a 6, then you test the other person....nothing. "Hmmm...is this thing working?"  Test the previous person and it hits a 6 again for a big laugh! Test your stooge again and nothing! Huge laughs.. Appologize saying, "Im sure this isn't working right, I'm so sorry". Use it as a running gag. Make sure it's the principal or the Boss who is okay to poke fun at. Never embarrass a child.   Steve.
Ken Scott and Trixie Bond both saw the prototype at Axtell's Studio in January when they worked the Magic Castle.

I love it! It will be a sell out. This prop you will be able to use in so many venues. You are going to LOVE IT. I am buying two of them ! - Ken Scott

I just got back from attending the VentHaven ConVENTtion in KY www.venthaven.com (where Steve introduced this prop) and purchased Axtell's new Off The Meter. Luckily, I live in Cincinnati and was still able to perform a show this morning, so I was the first, besides Steve, to try out this new amazing audience warm-up tool.

The effect is basically an audience applause meter. After a bit of byplay by having the audience compete who is the loadest, you have everyone applaud and cheer and the the meter breaks open with a colorful surprize. Their applause was off the meter!

I bought this the day before and was confidence enough with its easy mechanics and plot that I thought I'd try it out today. I had a back up warm-up ready in case it didn't play well and bombed. Well I didn't need my back up because it played great and the kids' loved it! In fact it got a beter reaction then my warm-up I've performed hundreds of times. At the end they really thought they broke it and were shocked (great reaction) then laughed knowing it was a gag.

I used a couple of other gags such an ugly meter. I enjoyed the rollercoaser of emotions it brought to the audience. I highly recommend this visual prop for it's reactions, ease of use, and success for the all important warm-up.

Jason

It came today (thank you Betsy) and was used tonight. I used it as an:

"Applause Meter"

"Lie Detector"

"Magical Ability Detector"

and since it was at my Flagship Country Clubs Family Night Dinner it was a "Great Food Detector" (which this place does have) and I had the chefs come out and THEY got a rousing round of applause which was a 1st for them.

Thank you Steve, it is awesome!!!

CARE - Store your new meter in your show case or protective trunk to avoid damage to the surface and needle. Do not leave in a hot car for hours, plastics and thermal glues can soften.  Treat it well and it will serve you well.

Here is a cooling device to keep your hot car cooler. I've not used it before but it sounds interesting if it's honest.

AUDIENCE PICKER IDEA!
Use the METER to test your audience members for the "right" volunteer. Testing by pointing the sensor at different people 3,5,7.....10! You found your volunteer (and it wasn't favoritism either) the magic Pick-O-Meter found them!
NEED A CASE?  FYI I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics and picked up a great case in the Art Supplies Section. The Off The Meter fits very nicely inside, PLUS, the case has a telescoping handle and two wheels so you can tote it around easily. The other bonus is that it has many pockets(removeable) and storage areas. It even had an easel, when folded out flat was the size of a close-up pad.( well padded great quality) As soon as I saw it, there was no hesitation in buying it. Wanted to mention this since Off The Meter should be in a case, and this case is great!!

Meter Noisey Alarm Idea
from Lou Hilario - Philippines.

I bought an inexpensive push button alarm from any hardware store and mounted it with hot glue to my sensor handle. I painted it to match. When the needle hits a 10, I first trigger this alarm with my thumb and then blow open the meter box.

OFF THE METER - Handling idea!

The Loop Method by Troy Murphie (Australia)

If you would like to utilise the ‘Hand in Front’ method of holding the Meter and find it difficult to swing your thumb around to take hold of the handle as the case opens, then loop yourself a piece of cord (eg Shoelace) and attach it by feeding the loop through itself onto the rear half of the handle, centre position (diagram #1).

When the case is closed there is a space in the plastic moulding of the case (diagram #2) that allows the case to close unhindered by the cord.

Once you have this set up, close the case and slip your hand through the loop of cord with your hand holding the handle in the ‘Hand in Front’ method (diagram #3).

The release now is simple. When you are ready for the Meter to explode let go entirely of the handle (diagram #4) and the case will drop open. I use a slight upward motion of my hand not only to exaggerate the explosion of the Meter, but also for insurance that the case will open fast.

I then quickly take hold of the rear half of the handle again (diagram #5).

Hi steve,
I thought it was time to say thank for making such a great prop. I use this at the start off the show and it goes down so well it's just so much fun to use! Well here is a picture of my daughter holding Off The Meter.

I have added some cogs to make it look more mechanical. I just used foam from a craft store, however over in the states you can buy some cogs that are magnetic and they go on your fridge and they all move as well. I think mine still look cool as the colours are nice and bright.

Hey, Steve! I have a few new ideas for owners of "Off the Meter":

You can buy cheap window alarms which will start as soon as the meter "breaks". They're 3 for a £1 in "Poundland" here in the UK. I have FOUR attached to my meter, depending on the size of venue, I switch on 2,3, or all 4 before I use the meter.

I've made a holder for 3 party poppers at the back of the meter (which is never seen, though it doesn't matter even if it is). By attaching a 1kg weight to the meter handle with string, and to the party poppers by a piece of rope (the string keeps the rope and weight falling to the floor), the party poppers burst at the exact moment the meter "breaks".

Spring snakes inside the meter add to the fun, and help the meter to fall open.

Now that I've used the meter at least a hundred times, I'm regularly getting comments along the lines of: "That was a great bit of advertising you did at the end of the party.....all the parents thought your noise meter was fantastic! They all went away thinking this was the best party their kids had ever attended."

I can't tell you how pleased I am with "Off the Meter". But also, the addition of party poppers and spring snakes makes the visual breaking at the end significantly more surprising.
