YOU CAN MODIFY THE (YOU) LINES TO FIT YOUR PERSONALITY. REWRITE AND BE CREATIVE!
SOUND ADVISE: You can perform this routine by playing the CD on a
quality "boom box" portable stereo player in small areas, or over a
professional sound system in large areas such as an auditorium or outside. Do
not play on a small inexpensive CD player because the sound will distort when
you try to play it loudly.
The CD should be played with plenty of volume. Kids will be laughing hard and will miss the
routine if it is too quiet, and adults may keep laughter to a minimum for fear
of missing parts of the program. The
volume of the CD should be set about the same as if you were speaking over a
microphone to be heard by the group, or louder.
It is best to have
the CD played over a public address system and have the soundman preset the
volume level to be compatible with the your microphone level.
Read your Magic Drawing Board instructions, and learn how to
operate the board, before learning this routine. You will gain insight from the instructions that will help you
with the acting out of this routine. To
operate the mouth, press down on the lever approximately once per
syllable. Example:

“HEL - LO!”
DRAWING
GUESSING GAME.
Create a fun drawing game with your audience by choosing a
volunteer and asking them to draw a picture of their favorite thing to
eat. Tell the rest of the children that
they should try to guess what it is.
The kids will love to watch the child draw, and will want a turn at the
game. Select the winner and have them
draw something else. Some ideas for
things to draw:
FAVORITE FOOD
FAMOUS PERSON
FAVORITE ANIMAL
PIECE OF CLOTHING
Have fun with this part.
The idea is to convince the audience that the board, the marker and the
wipe cloth are normal props. The real
routine will really pack a lot of power once you start drawing the cake.
YOU: Okay now, let’s draw a really big
birthday cake. Ready?
|
|
|
|
(Draw top of cake)
Here’s the top....
(Draw left side)
Here’s the sides...it’s a big cake, isn’t it?
(Draw right side)
|
|
|
|
Here’s the bottom... And now the cake plate...
(Draw
the plate under the cake)
(Draw bottom
line) (Draw the plate under the
cake)
...okay, and the pedestal down
below (Draw pedestal)
|
|
|
|
Now, let’s put some Okay, there’s the cake, but
fancy decorations on it. something’s missing from the top. Right…candles!
(Draw candles -
the right
Okay, and on the bottom. number for the age)

NOTE: When you draw on the candles, you will be
drawing them over the top line of the ellipse making the shape of the top of
the cake. You will need to erase the
intersecting lines with your fingertip, so the candles will appear to be on the
cake top.
|
|
YOU: And now I’m going to light the
candles. I’ll get out my lighter
here. Chick, chick,
click…hey, hey, hey.
(Pretend that your marker is a flint lighter and you are trying to
strike it. Then draw on the flames)
All right now, on the count of 3, I
want you all to blow out the candles with me.
Are you
ready?
Okay, everybody, take a deep breath and 1-2-3… BLOW!
(Notice that nothing happened to the
candles.)
Huh! That’s funny…
they’re still lit. I guess you didn’t
blow hard enough. Okay let’s try it
again, but blow
bigger this time.
Okay, ready? Inhale everybody…
1-2-3… blow!
(Pretend that you noticed something happen.)
Did you see that? I think I saw one of them flicker just a
little tiny bit. Let’s really blow them
now. Come
on,
let’s blow them off the cake! Now
remember, on the count of 3… ready?
Inhale, ONE…TWO…
(Look at
candles and forget that the kids are holding their breath. They will eventually
let it all out and start laughing.)
You know, maybe I should take a closer look at these candles, something seems wrong with them.
Ahhhh. Oh!
I see what the problem is. I
drew those trick candles, the kind you can’t blow out! (LAUGHTER)
All right now, I was just kidding. Hey, let’s do something really fun: let’s turn this cake into a magical birthday cake. Watch this:
|
|
Draw some eyes on here...
…and a nose...
...and a mouth.
YOU: Hey look, the cake is asleep.
I’m going to turn on some soft sleeping music.
(#3) SLEEPING MUSIC (Snoring sound and lullaby music)
YOU: Wow, it really is asleep! Would you like to help me wake it up? Well, on the count of 3, we will all
yell “surprise”. Ready? 1-2-3 SURPRISE!
|
|
(You bring your hand in front of the cake’s eyes, snap and open your
hand quickly with fingers spread. Then
remove your hand with some magical flair.
This will cover the eyes being moved on and look like magic)
(Move eye lever so that eyes appear and look back and forth to the rhythm)
(KIDS SQUEAL AND POINT AT BOARD)
YOU: Wow, can you believe this?
|
|
(To board) Are you alive?
CAKE: Oh Yeah!
(LAUGHTER
AND MORE SQUEALING)
YOU: Well, this is a surprise! You can
talk!
CAKE: Of course I can talk, I’m a
talk-o-late cake! (LAUGHTER)
YOU: Wow! I ‘m a better artist than I thought! (LAUGHTER)
CAKE: How
do I look?
YOU: Why, you’re as pretty as a
picture! Ha, ha, ha. What is your
name?
CAKE: Happy! I’m Happy the birthday cake!
YOU: I can’t believe this! How real are you?
(Rub
finger on cake and taste fingertip)
YUM. You really taste good!
CAKE: Well, thanks. Say, what is that sticky stuff all over me,
anyway?
YOU: Icing.
CAKE: You
what?
YOU: I
said, “ICING”!
CAKE: Well, I’m glad you do, but you
still didn’t answer my question. What is
that sticky stuff?
YOU: I just told you... “I-CING”!
CAKE: That’s nice, I SING too!
(#4) I’m Hap, Hap, Happy the Birthday cake,
I’m a special
kind of talk-o-late cake you make…
YOU: Well, Happy, I’d like to
introduce you to our special birthday (boy/girl).
CAKE: Oh good, where are they?
YOU: Right there.
CAKE: Where?
YOU: Over
there.
CAKE : Over there…
With the hair,
Like a bear,
Trying to scare,
All the…
YOU: Happy! That’s enough! Do you see (name of child)?
CAKE: Actually, I can’t seem to find
them.
YOU: Hmmm. I think we might have a
problem here. How many fingers do you see? (you hold up one finger)
CAKE: Aaah….three.
YOU: (Holding
up 3 fingers) Now how many do you see?
CAKE: Eleventy-two?!
YOU: Happy,
I think you might need some glasses. I’ll draw some on you …here you go…
|
|
|
|
YOU:
(Draw one side)
(#5) GLASSES FX
CAKE: Well, I can see half the kids now!
YOU: (Draw other side)
CAKE: Oh, now I
can see much better! So, where
Is the birthday kid?
YOU: (Name of child) is right
here, Happy. (you point to the child)
CAKE: There you are! And I have something for you!
(#6) It’s a Hap, Hap, Happy birthday song,
It’s a special time for you, all day long;
We’ll party with
your friends and your family,
But don’t get
too close, cause you can’t eat me! Hee, hee, hee
YOU: Happy! That’s not very
nice. Kids are supposed to eat birthday cakes on their birthday.
CAKE: Well,
I’m special. I’m not an ordinary birthday cake, ya’ know.
YOU: Okay, so then, tell us about
yourself.
CAKE: Piece o’ cake… what do you
want to know?
YOU: Where were you born?
CAKE: Where else? In the bakery!
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. (LAUGHTER)
YOU: And you have a family?
CAKE: Oh sure. When my mom got
married, she became a wedding cake. (LAUGHTER)
But that was a
long time ago...back before I was baked.
(LAUGHTER)
YOU: Were you smaller when you were
freshly baked?
