YOU CAN MODIFY THE (YOU) LINES TO FIT YOUR PERSONALITY.  REWRITE AND BE CREATIVE!

SOUND ADVICE: You can perform this routine by playing the CD on a quality "boom box" portable stereo player in small areas, or over a professional sound system in large areas such as an auditorium or outside. Do not play on a small inexpensive CD player because the sound will distort when you try to play it loudly.

The CD should be played with plenty of volume.  Kids will be laughing hard and will miss the routine if it is too quiet, and adults may keep laughter to a minimum for fear of missing parts of the program.  The volume of the CD should be set about the same as if you were speaking over a microphone to be heard by the group, or louder.

It is possible to convert your CD to an MP3 using appropriate software (for use on an IPOD, ZEN or other MP3 player). Free conversion tools can be found on-line.    You may want to actively pause the CD or MP3 during your performance in case you get a large audience laugh (we hope you do) after one of the jokes.

It is best to have the CD played over a public address system and have the soundman preset the volume level to be compatible with the your microphone level.

OPENING MUSIC

(Bring puppet out with a simple plastic Halloween mask on, nothing scary).

(Puppet pretends to be scary during music)

P          BOOOOOO…

Y          Well, hello folks, as you know it’s almost Halloween time!

P          BOOOOOO…

Y:         So I brought along someone who could help us talk about Trick or Treating.

(playing along like you don’t know the puppet)

P          BOOOOO…

Y          Hello, and – who – might – you – be?

P          (turns and looks at you)   BOO!   (music stops)

Y          (holding chest)   Oh my…you really scared me!

P          Ha, ha, ha…

Y          I can’t tell who you are with that mask on, (name of puppet).

P          Ha, ha, ha…That’s kind of the idea.  Hey, what are you doing?

Y          (Taking off the mask)   Oh look, it’s…(name of puppet)!

P          Ha, ha, ha…Pretty good costume, wasn’t it?

Y          Yes, I….

P          I thought and thought about all kinds of costumes that I could get…you know like crazy monsters, and super heroes, and funny animals…

Y          Okay…

P          …but then I saw this mask and I thought – bingo!  That’s the one for me, so I got it because I knew that if I put that on, nobody would ever know who I was, and I was right…ha, ha!   Because YOU couldn’t guess my name!  Ha, ha, ha, ha!

Y          That’s fine.  We’re here to talk about Trick or Treat and how to stay safe.

P          (Slowly turns to look at you) Why would you want to talk about safety on Halloween?   It’s time to have FUN…to go Trick or Treating and get goodies!   Why would you want to talk about safety?

Y          Because if you aren’t careful …you might have an accident.

P          (Gasp)  An accident?  An Accident!!??   Oh no…oh, that wouldn’t be fun!  I don’t want to have an accident.  Help me…help me…PLEASE!!!

Y          Okay, well don’t panic.  Here are some simple things you can do….

P          Okay…okay, I’m listening really, really hard!

Y          All right, imagine this…it’s a dark night…

(Owl and crickets fx)

P          Oh, oh…I like this!   Okay…a dark SCARY night!   Oh this is FUN!

Y          You are out trick-or-treating, who are you with?

P          Nobody….I like to go alone.

Y          Oh no!

(Doomsday lightning/organ fx)

P          What!!  What’d I say???

Y          You always go with somebody…your parents or some close friends.

P          Okay, okay…then I’m with my parents and my friends…both….I’ve got a big bag of candy.

Y          Good.  Now look over there!  OH NO!!

(Doomsday lightning/organ fx)

P          What is it??

Y          There’s a car coming down the street toward you.

(Car approaching fx)

P          What kind of car?

Y          It doesn’t matter, here it comes, what are you going to do?

P          I yell…STOP!!!!!!

Y          He can’t hear you, and he’s coming fast!

P          Um…um…well…a…

Y          Come on…what do you do?!!

P          HURRY!!!!!!   Get out of the street!!!!

Y          Good idea…oops, but you dropped your candy…what do you do?

P          I’m not going to get hit by a car – forget the candy!!!!!

(Tire screech!!!!  Honk, honk!!!    Drives off again fx)

P          Oh…that was a close one…I’m gonna stay on the sidewalk!

Y          Good thinking.    What should you carry with you?

P          Oh, that’s easy.   The candy…but you said I dropped it.  But no worries, I can get more from the other houses….  I always get lots of candy bars and apples and peanuts and….

Y          (Interrupting)  NO!  What else should you carry that would help you be seen by cars?

P          Oh…a big sign that says – DON’T HIT ME!.

Y          No…a flashlight.

P          A flashlight!   That’s a great idea!  That way they can see me and I can see where I’m going.   Sometimes it’s hard to see with a mask on ya know.

Y          If you’re going to wear a mask make sure it has BIG eye holes…

P          Big eyes?  Like a bumble bee?   (LAUGHTER)

Y          …and make sure your costume is short enough that you won’t trip on it.

P          You want me to be a Bumble Bee in short pants?   (LAUGHTER)

Y          …and wear sturdy shoes that fit well so you won’t fall.

P          A Bumble Bee in short pants and Army boots…   (LAUGHTER)

Y          (exasperated) You don’t have to be a ……   Just be safe!

P          Well, I like my costume better, but I’ll be safe.  Oh…this is going to be so exciting!   I’m going to go to every house I can find…..

Y          Oh no………

(Doomsday lightning/organ fx)

P          (Shocked)   What?  What did I say?   Did I say something wrong?   Quick tell me!

Y          Only go to the houses you know, that have the lights on.

P          Oh…yeah, because the lights usually mean that they want you to come and get treats from them…..oh I love treats…..I usually eat them right as soon as they give them to me.

Y          OH NO!

(Doomsday lightning/organ fx)

P          (shocked)  What?   Did I say something wrong again????    HELP ME!!  HELP ME!!!

Y          Never EVER eat treats until you get home and your parents can look them over.

P          Why is that?

Y          They have to make sure that they’re all safe to eat.

P          Yeah…I wouldn’t wanna get sick.

Y          Right, and if you do all these things, you’ll have a safe Halloween.

P          …And a FUN Halloween!

Song:    The night is dark, just moon and stars,

            I check carefully for cars;

Trick or treating with my friends up the street,

            Carefully collecting all the candy to eat (spoken: not now but a little later);

(whispering) Watch out!  Something’s after you,

Get too close and they’ll….say…..BOO!!  Ha, ha, ha, ha….

Y          (You jump)  Ooh (name of puppet), you gotta stop scaring me like that!  Okay…now you go have a safe Halloween.

P          A FUN Halloween!!

CLOSING MUSIC

Y          A SAFE Halloween!

P          A FUN Halloween!…ha, ha, ha, ha.

(There is a 10 second dead space following the routine, so you can put the puppet away and return before stopping the CD if necessary)
